How to Replace Exterior Trim Patio Doors
Patio doors are similar to other exterior doors because they must be trimmed out in order to cover gaps between the wall and door frame. If you notice the trim on a patio door is rotting, you will need to replace it in order to improve the appearance. Be sure the exterior trim you purchase is wider than the trim you’re taking out.
Things you will need to replace exterior trim patio doors:
- Miter saw
- Trim nailer and nails
- Exterior-grade caulk
- Pry bar
- Hammer
- Tape measure
- Take off the old trim around the patio doors. Use a hammer to tap the end of a pry bar under the outer edge of the trim. Remove the trim in a gentle manner.
- Use a tape measure and hold it over the top of the doorway from each inner corner. Place a mark of the measurement on a piece of trim. Be sure to leave six inches or more beyond the measurement mark.
- Put the piece of trim looking up on the platform of a miter saw. Set the trim so the bottom edge is facing the saw blade and one of the marks are under the blade. You will then turn the blade 45 degrees outward from the mark. Be sure to lock the angle into place and cut the trim.
- Position the trim so the second mark is underneath the saw blade. You will then swivel the blade 45 degrees in the other direction. You will then lock the angle and cut the trim.
- Keep the cut piece along the top of the doorway. Be sure the trim’s bottom is even along the doorway edge. The two angled cuts should be pointing up and away from the upper corners.
- Hold the trim in place by putting pairs of trim nails every 10 to 12 inches from the trim nailer.
- Take measurements and cut the trim for the two vertical edges of the doorway. Be sure to cut miters in the top ends of the pieces. This will ensure they fit tight against the miters. A 90 degree joint will be created and make straight cuts that will be on the bottom ends of the trim pieces.
- Put a bead of exterior grade caulk around the trim to seal the joints.
