How to Replace RV Hot Water Heater Parts

If you have an older RV, you are fully aware of the issues and repairs that come along with ownership. Common problem are issues with the hot water tank, specifically that the pilot light will not remain on. If this is a common problem for you, following a few simple steps can offer you a solution.

What You'll Need:

  • Replacement parts

  • Pipe wrench

  • Sockets

  • Screwdriver

  1. Begin by turning all the gas valves to the off position. Use a 3/8 wrench to remove the thermocouple. You can take the part to your local hardware store a thermocouple is a universal part common in most home appliances.

  2. Next, you'll need to open your gas valves again and relight your pilot light. You can check the air to fuel ratio. If you find that the mixture is too rich, or even too lean, it can have an adverse affect on the pilot light and your heaters efficiency ability. To adjust, allow the hot water heater to remain operating and loosen the screw that is located on the air shutter.

  3. Move the shutter until it is 1/4 of the way open. Look at the main burner flame it should be blue with a hint of yellow tips. However, if there is too much yellow on the flame you can gradually open the shutter more. If you hear any roaring noises, you’ll need to close the air shutter a little as this is a sign of too much air.

  4. Once the area is open you will have access to install any necessary replacement parts.
