How to Replace a Lawn Tractor Tire

If one of the tires on your lawn tractor becomes damaged, do not worry; you can easily change out these small tires on your own. Most lawn tractors have small tires that do not have a tube inside of them. The process of changing them out is quick and easy, you will only need a little time and few basic tools to get the job done.

  1. Jack up the lawn tractor so that you can easily access the tire that is damaged.

  2. Unscrew the lug nuts that are holding the tire in place.

  3. Remove the damaged tire.

  4. Let the air out of the tire so that you can remove the tire from the rim. You should use a valve stem tool to make this process quick and easy. You can purchase a vale stem tool cheaply from your local home improvement store.

  5. Apply pressure to the bead of the tire with a large flat head screwdriver or tire iron to pry up the bead and release the damaged tire from the rim of your lawn tractor.

  6. If you are having trouble removing the bead from the tire, you may want to have someone else help you. Apply pressure to the two sidewalls of the tire at the same time, while using a piece of wood or other object to hold the tire in place.

  7. Clean the rim and apply a commercial lube product so that your new tire is able to form a proper seal to the rim. It is important that you thoroughly clean the rim and remove any remaining beading or other debris that may be stuck on the rim.

  8. Place your new tire onto the rim and apply force to push the tire onto the rim as much as you can by hand.

  9. Use your tire iron to ease the tire onto the rim starting at the bottom and working your way around the tire until you reach the top.

  10. Inflate the tire using an air compressor so that you can achieve the right amount of tire pressure. If you do not have a compressor, you can take the tire to the nearest gas station and use the air pump there to inflate your tire.

  11. Replace the tire onto your lawn tractor and replace the lug nuts.

  12. Tighten down the lug nuts in place using a lug nut wrench to ensure that they are tight enough.
