How to Replace an Aluminum Door Threshold

Aluminum door thresholds will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. These thresholds usually last longer than wooden thresholds, but still get old over time. Replacing these thresholds shouldn't be that difficult with the right tools. This is a great weekend home improvement project.

Things You'll Need:

  • Pry Bar

  • Screwdriver

  • Bucket

  • Soap

  • Water

  • Sponge

  • Screws

  • Electric Drill

  • Adhesive Glue

  • Caulk

  • Caulking Gun

  1. Remove the old threshold with a pry bar or screwdriver. You'll probably need to use a screwdriver if you have concrete floors because the threshold was probably screwed into the concrete. Also remember to remove any old weather stripping you attached to the threshold.

  2. Thoroughly clean the area where the old threshold was attached. There is probably dirt, debris and possibly glue around the area. Mix a little soap and water in a bucket and scrub the area with a sponge.

  3. Attach the new threshold the same way the old one was attached. Use the same type of screws if the threshold was screwed into cement. Make sure to use an electric drill when screwing in the new threshold. You'll probably have to purchase some adhesive glue from a home improvement store if this is how you plan on installing the new threshold. There should be a representative at the store who can make you the right amount of adhesive glue.

  4. Apply some caulk around the threshold for extra protection. The caulk and caulking gun should also be easily found in the same home improvement store.
