How to Replace the Fuel Filter on a 1995 Buick Riviera

In order to prevent a drop in your Riviera's engine performance, its fuel filter should be replaced regularly- preferably every 3,000 miles.  Fuel filters are important components of most engines that filter out dust and other particles of debris from the fuel.  The 1995 Buick Riviera happens to feature a filter system that is considerably more difficult to remove but with the right kind of tools and a little patience it can be done.

What you will need:

  • Car jack

  • Wrench

  • Ratchet

  • New engine oil

  • Socket

  • Flare wrench

  • Two chocks

  • Fuel pressure gauge

  • Plastic container

  • Clean towels

  1. Relieve the engine's fuel system pressure by first loosening the fuel filler cap and then, using a clean towel, connecting your pressure gauge into the test port's bleeder hose.

  2. Attach the other end of the bleeder hose into a large container on the ground and then open the gauge valve.  This will allow any fuel in the filler to drain out into the container.

  3. Close the gauge bleed valve when all of the fuel has finished draining and then remove the gauge from the test port.  Seal up the container full of fuel and set it aside until it can be properly disposed of.

  4. Put the Buick's emergency brake on and then slide the car jack under the driver's side front wheel.  Slide the two chocks securely behind the rear end tires and begin jacking up the front end of the car.

  5. Locate the filter; You'll find it situated near the driver's side next to the engine.

  6. Wrap another clean towel around the filter's fitting of the line.  It connects the filter's bottom to the fuel tank.  Carefully twist the fitting a few inches both ways until the line is loose enough to be pulled off.

  7. Loosen the nut that is securing the fuel line with your flare wrench until you can separate the fuel line from the filter.

  8. Remove the fuel filter with your ratchet by unscrewing its bracket from the frame rail.

  9. Mount the new filter into the old one's place and then reattach the bracket and frame rail.

  10. Apply a small amount of new oil onto the filter's nut and nipple.

  11. Complete the rest of the process in the reverse order.
