How to Replace the Serpentine Belt in a Hyundai Sonata
The main drive belt, commonly referred to as a serpentine belt, is a long belt that is responsible for driving several accessories. With the Hyundai Sonata there is typically a single serpentine belt that drives the alternator, air conditioner compressor and the power steering.
What You'll Need:
- Replacement belt
- Wrench set (with variable wrench sizes for different models)
- Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the tensioner. The serpentine belt tensioner is the mechanism that holds the belt in place with the proper amount of tension. It is attached to the engine with two bolts. Some individuals describe the Hyundai Sonata tensioner pulley as becoming connected in the form of a teardrop, with the bolts holding it to the engine.
- Take off the two bolts that are located near the tensioner using a wrench. Remove both the tensioner and the belt.
- Using either a belt routing diagram or your own drafted sketch, replace the serpentine belt. Depending on your model, start at the power steering pump, the belt goes to the left of the idler pulley and then over the top and around the right side of the air conditioner compressor on the left side of the crank pulley, to the right of the tensioner pulley and down to the alternator.
- Ensure the two lock bolts that hold the tensioner are tight.
- Ensure the belt is properly atop all of the pulleys. Turn the engine on and review the system to ensure proper installation.
