How to Restore Wood Siding

Wood siding adds a beautiful rustic look to your home. This type of siding is preferred because it lasts through all types of weather. If you purchase a home with this type of home, chances are that the siding will need restoring.

How to Restore Wood Siding


Materials Needed



  • Power washer

  • Chisel

  • Sandpaper

  • Bucket

  • Hot water

  • Bleach

  • Bucket

  • Scrub brush with soft bristles

  • Putty knife

  • Wood filler

  • Paint stirrer

  • Primer

  • Paintbrush

  • Paint



  1. Use a power washer to rinse the siding. Make sure you use a low setting so the siding is not damaged. Start at the top of and work your way down the wood siding.

  2. Inspect the siding for any areas that have chipped paint. Use a chisel to remove all as much of the chipped paint as possible. Take a piece of sandpaper or sand over the siding. Use care so the siding is not damaged.

  3. Fill a bucket with 2 gallons of hot water. Add 1 cup of bleach to the bucket. Dip the scrub brush with soft bristles into the solution. Clean the siding with the solution but use extreme care so the siding is not damaged.

  4. Make sure the siding is thoroughly soaked with the solution. Allow the solution to sit for 30 minutes. Rinse the siding with the power washer. Allow the siding to dry.

  5. Use a putty knife to fill any holes with wood filler. Make sure the filler is packed tightly and is even with the top of the siding. Use a piece of medium grit sandpaper to sand down the filler. Allow the siding to dry.

  6. Open a can of primer and stir it with a paint stirrer. Apply the primer with a paintbrush and allow it to dry for 24 hours.

  7. Blend the paint with a paint stirrer. Apply the paint with a paintbrush and allow it to dry for 24 hours. Apply a second coat of paint and allow it to dry for 24 hours.
