How to Rig a Saltwater Fishing Pole

There isn’t one single way to rig up a saltwater fishing pole. Saltwater poles can be set up differently based on what type of fish you’re trying to catch, how deep you’re fishing and how high the ocean tide is that day.

Items needed

  • Fishing rod equipped with a reel

  • 30 pound test fishing line

  • Sinkers

  • Hooks

  1. Thread your line through the eye holes on your saltwater fishing rod. Make sure to choose a graphite or fiberglass rod to avoid saltwater corrosion.

  2. Tie the line to your reel and reel in about 200 feet of line. Make sure to use at least 30 pound test line for ocean fishing.

  3. Cut the line about 4 feet from the end of your rod so you’ll have plenty of room to work when attaching hooks and sinkers.

  4. Determine what depth you’ll be fishing at in the water. You’ll need larger sinkers for deep sea fishing.

  5. Tie the amount and size of sinkers you desire on your line making sure you leave your bottom sinkers at least 12 inches above your hook.

  6. Tie your desired hook onto the end of your line using a fisherman’s knot. To achieve this knot, run your line through the eye of the hook, pull out enough slack to spiral your line around itself about 7 times, and run the end of the line through the opening you’ve created right above the hook. Tighten the knot. Remember, bigger fish will require the use of bigger hooks.

  7. Add the bait that will attract the fish you’re looking to catch to your hook, and you’re ready to go fishing.
