How to Seal Sand for a Brick Patio
If you want a warm rustic look for your patio, brick materials are a good choice. The bricks are held together by packing sand into the joints so they do not move around. This helps the patio last longer. From time to time you will have to pack sand into the joints to ensure the patio is stable.
Materials Needed
- Bucket
- Warm water
- Chlorine bleach
- Garden hose
- Scrub brush
- Brick stain remover
- Sand
- Push broom
- Brick sealant
- Paint roller
- Fill a bucket with 4 parts warm water. Add 1 part chlorine bleach to the bucket of water. Turn on the water from the patio and rinse the patio. Pour the bleach and water solution over the patio and scrub it with a scrub brush. Rinse the patio to remove all of the solution.
- Open a can of brick stain remover. Apply a layer of the remover over the entire patio. Use a scrub brush to scrub the remover into the bricks. This will remove any stains on the patio. This will also provide and ideal surface for the sealer. Rinse the patio with a hose and allow the patio to completely dry.
- Inspect the sand in the joints. You will need to fill the joints with sand if the sand levels are low. Spread sand over the entire surface of the patio. Use a push broom to sweep the sand into the joint.
- Remove the lid from a can of brick sealant. Acrylic based sealant is better to use. Mix the sealant with a paint stick to blend it. Apply the sealant over the entire patio with a paint roller. Allow the first coat to dry according to the directions on the can. Apply a second coat of sealant and allow it to dry for 24 hours.
