How to Select a Demolition Hammer
A demolition hammer, often called a demo hammer, is a very powerful tool, commonly used to remove building material. A demolition hammer is a cross between a chisel and a drill hammer. It is used with masonry, tiles and mortar. They are often used in both commercial and residential work. There are many things to take into consideration when selecting a demolition hammer.
Instructions:
- Determine the overall size and weight by checking the specifications. Demolition hammers are a balance between maneuverability and power. Smaller demo hammers will fit into your tool box easily and are a lot easier to carry around. Larger or heavier units often pack more power, but are more difficult to maneuver and store.
- Determine how each unit is powered. Demolition hammers can be powered by electricity, air compressors, or fuel cartridges. For maximum power, choose a cordless model that relies on a small air compressor or fuel cartridge.
- Review the options you have for the chisels and bits. Each brand of demolition hammer accepts a bit with a different type of chisel, although some are interchangeable. Choose a brand that accepts a wide variety of bits.
- Look for vibration control features. This is a great feature to have because lowering the vibration levels and noise can reduce the wear and tear on your body while using them. Spring-based vibration dampeners are the most effective, but pads and cushioned grips will also be sufficient.
- Look for an in-line motor design because this provides the best balance and easiest operation. Make sure the on/off switch and other controls are easy to access, and check that the tool fits well into your hands and comfortable to use.
- Choose the correct level of power to meet your needs. The power of a demo hammer is measured using foot pounds. The more foot pounds, the more power the hammer can provide. Choose higher foot pounds for tougher jobs, and lower foot pounds for smaller ones.
