How to Sell Used Furniture

There is furniture to get rid of in order to make room for the new furniture in your home.  Selling used furniture can take some time and may seem like a hassle.  You could just donate it to a local charity or organization, but selling it for some cash is always best.  Plus, it can get you some extra money for the new furniture you want to buy.

  1. Take a picture of the furniture you wish to sell.  You may want to take several pictures from different angles.  If the furniture has a reclining position, take a picture in both positions.

  2. Find a place you wish to sell your used furniture.  This can be a local newspaper classifieds, a community bulletin board or an online ad like Craigslist.

  3. Write a detailed description of the furniture you intend to sell.  Make sure you provide all the information possible.  You should also provide the color and size of the furniture.

  4. Determine a price.  You may set a price, but accept negotiations.  You may also state that your price is “firm,” meaning this is the amount you want and you will not take any offers.

  5. Give potential buyers a way to contact you, either by phone or email.  For your safety and protection, do not give your home address.

  6. Respond to inquiries about your furniture.  Be truthful about the condition and answer any questions buyers may have about the furniture.

  7. Arrange a time for the buyer to come and see the furniture.  If it is in your home, make sure that someone else is home with you when the potential buyer visits.  This is simply a safety precaution.

  8. Agree on a price and delivery or pick-up time.

  9. Accept the money in cash and allow the buyer to pick up the furniture on the arranged date.  Do not accept personal checks unless you can clear it first.  Reliable buyers will understand your caution in this matter.
