How to Sell Used Prom Dresses

Every spring, high school girls across the country, go on a hunt to find their perfect prom dress. Finding a dress that is both beautiful and affordable leads many prom goers to consider purchasing a discount or even a pre-owned dress. Therefore, if you have a used prom dress in good condition, it might be time to put some extra spending cash in your pocket.

There are several ways in which you can sell a dress. A dress can be listed in the local classified section of the newspaper, at an online auction or taken to a consignment shop.  However, before listing the item consider these tips.

  1. Inspect the dress to make sure it is free from any defects. It should be free from stain and rips. This is especially important no matter which method you use to sell the dress. However, it is even more so if the dress is being consigned to a shop for sale.

  2. If the dress is soiled have it dry cleaned. This will be an added expense, but it will also be a value added selling point to potential buyers. This is especially true if the dress you are selling is an expensive one.  However, if you choose not to have the dress cleaned. The price should reflect this.

  3. When listing the dress for sale it is important to offer a potential buyer as much information as possible about the dress.  For example, if the dress was purchased, but never worn and still has the tags attached, the advertisement should reflect this. It is important to include the brand, size and style number, and if it has been worn or not. This is especially valuable information if the dress is being listed in a local classified advertisement with no photograph.

  4. A picture is worth a thousand words holds very true when selling a used prom dress. Get good photographs of your dress. Make sure the photo's are clear and bright. If multiple photo's are permitted include them from the front and back of the dress. Take close-up shots of any beaded details. This aspect is extremely important if listing the dress on an online auction or website, which sells prom dresses.

  5. Price the dress accordingly. If it is dated you can't expect to get the same amount for it as if it were a current trendy style.

  6. If you have extra accessories such as shoes that match the dress, consider offering them as a bonus to the buyer.
