How to Send and Receive International Faxes

Sending and receiving an international fax is very simple and basically the same as faxing within the United States. The only difference is that when you send a fax internationally, you will need to use a country code, which is a numeric geographical code assigned to a specific country. When receiving a fax, the only thing you will need is a fax machine with a working phone connection.

Things You'll Need:

  • Fax machine

  • Cover letter

  • Country code

Sending a Fax

  1. Dial 011, which is the international dialing prefix and is needed to connect to the international network.

  2. Dial the country code and then the city code, which is akin to an area code. If you are unsure about a specific country code, there are many online resources available to help you.

  3. Dial the phone number of the person you are sending it to. For example, if you wanted to send an international fax to Paris, France, it would be (011) (33) (01) (the number you are dialing). The international prefix is 011, the country code is 33 and the area code for Paris is 01 (the 0 can be dropped when dialing from the U.S).

  4. Listen for the fax tone. As you are dialing, it is a good idea to listen for this just to confirm that your fax is working properly, especially the first few times you send an international fax.

  5. Press start to send your cover letter and fax.

Receiving a Fax

  1. Check your phone connection to make sure it is working properly. Be sure that your fax is plugged in, all necessary cables are connected and there is a dial tone when you pick up the receiver.

  2. Make sure your fax has enough paper for the transmission. Many faxes today will have the memory to store the fax transmission for printing out later if the machine runs out of paper; however, when receiving an international fax, it is economical and time efficient to verify immediately that all pages have been sent.

  3. Wait for the fax to come, confirm that you have received all intended pages and you are finished.
