How to Set Up Ladder Shelves
You don't have to be a carpenter to set up ladder shelves. You can use a fire ladder to create a large custom bookcase or an A-frame ladder to create a small, chic shelving solution with a few simple tools.
While there are several ways to set up ladder shelves, there are two simple ways to set up ladder shelves depending on your needs. For low cost and a large amount of shelf space, you can repurpose a fire ladder. To create a smart, self-supporting shelving solution, use an A-frame ladder.
Here's how to create a large rectangular bookcase.
- Cut a 25-fire ladder into four pieces. This creates enough end supports for two bookcases. By laying salvaged wood or extra lumber across corresponding rungs of two end supports, you can create a bookcase over 6 feet high.
- Screw salvaged wood or lumber into the rungs of the supports on each side of the bookshelf using a power screwdriver. The bookcase can be painted or if you prefer, it can be left unpainted for a natural, bohemian look.
- Bolt the supports of the bookcase to the wall when the bookcase is dry.
- Using an A-frame ladder, you can create a removable shelving solution to fit almost any space.
- Open the legs of the ladder. Measure the width from the outside of one rung to another on the same level with a measuring tape. You will need the width of both levels to buy prefabricated board at least ¾ inch thick for the ladder shelves.
- Screw the shelves into the rungs on both sides of the ladder using a power screwdriver (1 inch screws are recommended).
- Paint the ladder shelves if you like. After the paint has dried completely, place the ladder flush against the wall.
- Be sure to evenly distribute the weight of books and other items on the ladder shelves.
