How to Shoot Elastomeric Paint Through a Spray Rig

Elastometric paint is a thick elastic coating that is most suitable for exterior surfaces that have a tendency to expand and contract as the temperatures fluctuate. If you have an exterior surface that you plan to finish with an elastrometric paint, you can reduce the time it takes to complete the project by using a spray rig.

What You'll Need:

  • Canvas drop cloths

  • Masking paper

  • Painter's masking tape

  • Gas can

  • Unleaded gasoline

  • Gas-powered spray rig

  • 0.21 spray tip

  • Elastometric paint

  • Water

  • Wooden stir stick

  1. Evenly spread a layer of canvas drop cloths just underneath the area than you plan to paint in. You can shield any vulnerable adjacent surfaces from the elastomeric paint overspray by covering them with masking paper as well as painter's tape.

  2. Completely fill the gas-powered spray rig with an unleaded gasoline. Take off each of the filters from inside the pump as well as the spray gun. If you don’t, they could affect the elastomeric paint's ability to properly pass through the system.

  3. Ensure that the spray gun is equipped with a .021 spray tip. If you use a .015 tip, you run the risk of the elastomeric paint not being able to properly pass through.

  4. Insert four gallons of the elastomeric paint into a plastic 5-gallon bucket and add a half-gallon of clean tap water to it. Begin stirring the diluted elastomeric paint for a period of no less than five minutes. You can use a wooden stirring stick to complete this step.

  5. Take the pump and dip it into the diluted elastomeric paint. Begin the spray rig. You’ll want to apply the elastomeric paint to the surface with the use of a spray gun. Ensue that you spray in a side-to-side motion, going from left to right. In order to eliminate the risk of sagging, be sure that you maintain a distance of 18-inches between the surface and spray gun tip.
