How to Switch Internet Providers

How to Set Up Two Internet Providers

Broadband Internet is one of the fastest and most secure versions of Internet service. One problem broadband users face is connectivity issues. Broadband signals can easily become interrupted. Many people use a dial-up service provider as a backup measure if their broadband goes out.

  1. Call an Internet service provider and ask whether it offers broadband and dial-up Internet service. Many companies no longer offer dial-up services, but some still do. If you cannot find a company that offers both, shop around for each service separately and go with two separate companies that offer the best prices.

  2. Purchase your services and wait for your installation kits to come in the mail. Some service providers might send a technician to install the initial equipment, but you will be responsible to hook up the modem, router and phone connections, as well as the installing the computer software. The broadband modem will connect through your cable line, and the dial-up modem will connect through your telephone line.

  3. Follow the installation instructions with each kit, and install the equipment. Put the software CDs into your computer and install each program.

  4. Connect to the Internet using your broadband router. Broadband Internet stays on at all times. If your broadband signal is weak or the service is out, you can switch to dial-up. Dial-up may be slower than broadband, but it will serve as a convenient backup. You will need to connect to the dial-up provider from your computer using your username and password. You can then use your dial-up Internet connection to visit your broadband provider's website and find online support for your broadband service.
