How to Set Up Wireless Printing at Home
With multiple computers like laptops and netbooks in addition to your main computer, it would be useful to set up a wireless printing system in your home. This type of system allows users to print from any computer, laptop, netbook or iPhone in the house. No wires are needed. The information is sent to printer through a wireless router.
- Determine that your system is capable of running on a wireless router. You will need to purchase a wireless modem. These can also be used for satellite television as well as cell phones and printers.
- Choose a convenient location for the printer. You want to put it somewhere that is easy to access for everyone in the home. If you have to run downstairs every time you print something, this may not work. Choose a central location or put it with the main computer.
- Connect your printer directly in the system with Cat 5 cable, if it has a built in Ethernet jack. If not, you will need to use a wireless print server. Connect the printer cables to the modem.
- Set up the printer’s wireless system. You will need to configure the TCP/IP address and make sure the computer is connected to the system. Some printers have software to make this process easy. Check the manual or look online for specific information about your printer.
- Test the connection by trying to print from a wireless location. The wireless unit may need to set up the printing program or connect to the wireless system before the document or picture will print.
- Add the printer to the list of printers in the control panel. This will allow all users to access the same computer, wired or wireless.
