How to Set Up a Saltwater Fish Aquarium
Setting up a saltwater fish aquarium is not too different from that of a freshwater tank. Obviously, the biggest difference is the added salt. There is some more maintenance issue that must be considered as well. There is also weekly testing of the water levels required.
- Determine the size you need. Your saltwater fish tank should be large enough for your fish when it is full grown. You should also think about whether or not you will be getting more fish in the future.
- Choose a salt type. There are several popular choices, but one of the most popular is marine salt. It is easy and affordable at almost any pet supply store.
- Set up tank. Place the tank in its permanent location.
- Mix water and salt. Add the salt to the water before placing it in the tank. Follow the mixture directions provided on the salt container.
- Install pump and filter. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to hook up the pump and add the filter properly.
- Add a heater to the tank. It is very important for saltwater fish to stay at the appropriate temperature. This range is anywhere from 78 to 82 degrees. A heater can ensure this temperature is maintained.
- Test your tank. The PH, nitrate, and ammonia levels should be tested at least once a week. Incorrect levels in any of these elements could affect the health of your fish.
- Decorate you tank. You can add special corals and lighting to spice up your saltwater fish tank. You can coordinate it with the type of fish you have to make a tropical paradise.
