How to Sew Flower Girl Dresses
Flower girls can be the icing on the cake for any wedding. Many brides opt to use their nieces or friends' children. The best part of having flower girls are the precious little gowns. Most choose either an ivory or white dress, that resembles the dresses of the bridesmaids. Flower girl dresses can be something as simple as a sundress or as outrageous as a big frilly dress.
What you'll need:
- Fabric
- Dress pattern
- Zipper or buttons
- Scissors
- Iron
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Iron board
- Matching thread
Step 1: Find out what size the flower girl wears. Most children's dress pattern sizes are very similar to store bought clothing. Just in case, take the child's height and waist measurement.
Step 2: Choose an age-appropriate pattern. Make sure it is comfortable, and easy to walk in. It may be a good idea to choose a pattern that has a knee length, so the flower girl won't trip while walking up the aisle.
Step 3: Choose a fabric and any decorations like ribbons, lace, or trim.
Pick a good quality thread that matches the fabric. Do this for zippers or buttons as well. Zippers are more functional, but buttons are more decorative and gives a dress an extra touch.
Step 4: Cut out the pattern pieces. Smooth out any wrinkles in the pattern pieces, and use an iron on a low temperature if needed.
Step 5: Follow the directions to cut out the dress pieces and sew them together. Have the flower girls to try the dresses on before you hem the skirt and sleeves to make sure everything is the right length.
