How to Sew a Bag for Walkers the Elderly Use

What a convenience for the elderly to have a bag attached to their walker. They can keep their glasses, a phone and even a good book handy at all times with a bag. Sewing a bag is a simple project, and you don't necessarily need a pattern to do it.

Items Needed:

  • Sewing Machine

  • Yard of Heavy Fabric (Denim or canvas is good)

  • Matching Thread and Two Buttons or Velcro

  1. Cut off a 2-inch strip of fabric evenly from one end of the piece of fabric. This will serve as two straps for hanging.

  2. Fold the strip in half lengthwise and cut it along the fold.

  3. Place the two strips together, face-to-face, and sew along the edges with a 1/8-inch seam. Turn it right side out and place it aside.

  4. Finish the raw edges of the remaining fabric with a zigzag stitch. Fold it in half evenly, face-to-face lengthwise to make the bag. Sew only the sides together with a half-inch seam.

  5. Turn it right side out and fold the edge down a half-inch, wrong side to wrong side. You may pin the edge to hold it in place.

  6. Sew it all the way around the top evenly with a half-inch seam. Now you have the bag.

  7. Sew a button or 1-inch square of Velcro on the front side of the bag about three inches in from each side of the seam. These will be the closures once the straps are placed over a bar on the walker.

  8. Get the strip you sewed first and cut it in half to make two straps. Tuck the raw ends inside the straps to finish the edge using a 1/4-inch seam.

  9. Sew one edge of each strap outside the top back of the bag about 3 inches in from each side seam. Make a buttonhole or sew on a small square of matching Velcro on the other end. The bag is complete.
