How to Sew on Snaps

Snaps can be a wonderful alternative to buttons and can make putting on and taking off an article of clothing much easier. Once they are attached they can be much more secure than a button. Attaching them to your clothing can be best achieved by sewing them on.

  1. Position the snaps on your garment. Some people choose to place them under ornamental buttons to give the appearance of a button closure, but with the convenience of a snap.

  2. Choose a thread color that will match your garment. Thread your needle and secure the end of your thread by knotting the end.

  3. Separate the two sides of the snap and begin with the ball portion of the snap first. Position the piece with the ball pointed upward.

  4. Begin from above your snap and bring your needle and thread through the first hole on the snap and the first layer of material of your garment. If you are attaching it to two layers of material, you can attach it invisibly by only sewing through the top layer of fabric.

  5. Bring your needle around the outer edge of the hole and through the material. Bring the needle back up through the hole. Do this several times before moving to the next hole.

  6. Secure your snap by tying a knot after your last stitch.

  7. Rub marking pencil or tailor's chalk on the ball of the snap and press the edges of the garment together as they will be secured.

  8. Rub lightly to transfer the markings to the opposite side of the garment to mark the location of the socket side of the snap. Repeat steps four, five and six until all of your sockets are attached.
