How to Teach Kids to Crochet
Crochet is a popular craft for many people because it allows they to relax and create sewing projects that can be given as gifts or used in the home. Children may also enjoy crocheting. Before they will be able to create projects, they must learn the basic fundamentals of the hobby.
- Start by teaching the basic stitches instead of jumping into a project. Many people choose to learn as they go and often start crochet with a simple project such as a scarf. This can be overwhelming for children, and they will benefit and learn better by learning the stitches first and later applying them to a project.
- Find crochet patterns that interest children. Kids are much more likely to take an interest in crochet doll clothing or stuff animals than clothing patters. Search online or at your local craft store for patterns that are designed for children. These patterns are also likely to have simple stitches and be easier for children to understand.
- Use bright colored yarn to teach children. Not only are children more interested in bright colors, but they can also be used to distinguish between different strands of yard and help them identify the proper stitches.
- Check your local craft supply store for crochet teaching manuals. These will give you some ideas of where to start and how to explain the stitches to the child. You may even be able to find books that are aimed for children and contain simple and easy to understand steps, tips and techniques.
