How to Shade Daylilies
Daylilies come in a wide array of striking colors and can be a beautiful addition to your garden. They require a very specific amount of sunshine and shade to grow their beautiful blooms. In hot climates especially, they will need shade to shelter them from the heat of the afternoon sun. You can create a shade structure to help protect your plants.
- Measure the length of your garden and the height of your flowers to determine the dimensions of your shade structure. Obtain pieces of lumber that will be high enough to act as stakes for your cloth. You will need to install at least four stakes. Depending on the length of your garden, you may also need to add support in the middle of your cloth. Your stakes must be taller than your tallest daylily.
- Add approximately 4-6 inches in length to account for support beneath the soil. Purchase the appropriate length of UV fabric or shade cloth to cover the entire length of your garden.
- Dig the holes for your stakes. Determine the number of stakes you will need and choose their placement. Using a garden trowel, dig a hole at each stake site. The hole should be between 4 and 6 inches in depth.
- Install your stakes. Place a stake in each hole and fill the hole in with dirt. Pack the dirt tightly around the base of the stake for added support.
- Drape and attach your UV fabric. Unroll your UV fabric across the length of your garden. Attach the fabric to each stake. You can choose to use a hammer and some nails to attach the cloth. A staple gun will work, as well.
