How to Shop for Gymnastics Kids Clothes
When purchasing gymnastics clothing for your child, there are a number of aspects to consider. Leotard clothing is standard for gymnasts, because these stay in place and allow the child to have maximum flexibility without worrying about a shirt flying up or pants slipping down.
- Confirm that the material provides your child with enough room to move. If your child feels like he or she is stuck in an outfit that is suffocating, he or she will not perform as well as with an alternative outfit and could possibly be in danger of passing out from heat exhaustion. Ideally, the material should be spandex for practice clothing and mesh or velvet for the professional events where the appearance is of special importance. All options provide your child with flexibility and are breathable materials.
- Have your child try the leotard on before investing in it. It is important that the clothing fits appropriately in order for it to be ideal. For instance, if the legs are cut too high, this can show too much of your child’s skin during performances, especially when flips are involved. Additionally, you need to ensure that the clothing covers the underwear, including the bra, so that your child maintains a professional appearance.
- Consider the decorative elements of the clothing. Ask yourself if the decorative pieces are able to fall off during performances. If so, avoid this type of clothing for gymnastics unless your only reason for purchasing it is to take pictures. When pieces come off of clothing during performances, it becomes distracting and can even cause a point deduction if your child is competing.
