What Does Esq Mean?

How to Sign Esq After Your Name

Most licensed attorneys put “Esq” after their name when they sign it. It is frowned upon for non-licensed attorneys to use Esq after their name. If you are a not a licensed attorney, you need to go to law school and pass the bar exam. You can then use Esq after your name whenever you sign it.

  1. Become licensed as an attorney in your state. You will need to graduate from a law school, and then pass the bar exam before you can become licensed. It is not acceptable to most people to use Esq. after your name if you are not a licensed attorney. To go to law school, you first have to obtain an undergraduate degree, and then go to 3 years of law school. You then have to pass the bar exam before you can obtain your license to become an attorney. You cannot practice law without passing the bar exam.

  2. Write your name on the signature line of the document or contract you are signing. If you are the attorney who is signing a legal document you can sign your first and last name. Only put your first and last name, do not include Mr. or Mrs., etc. before your name.

  3. Put a comma after your last name and then write Esq. after the comma. The E should be capitalized and all other letters should be small. Place a period after the last letter in Esq. For example, Joe Smith, Esq. Every time you sign your name in a legal capacity, you should sign it with the Esq. after your name.
