How to Size a Grill Cover

Grill covers are a great way to protect your investment by shielding your grill from sun damage, rain and snow.  Grill covers also help keep pests away and prevent unsightly scratching.  Before you buy a grill you will need to size it by getting exact dimensions so you know which cover to buy.

  1. Measure the height of your grill.  This measurement is from the tallest point of your grill to the bottom of the wheels.  A grill cover should be as tall as your grill to protect the entire height from damage.

  2. Measure the depth of your grill.  This is how deep your grill is when you face the front of it - from front to back.  Some grill covers do not list this measurement but you need to have an idea of how much space your grill will expand the cover after installation.

  3. Measure the width of your grill.  This is the measurement from side to side when you are facing the front of your grill.  This is the other commonly used measurement on grill descriptions.  Make sure to include extra shelving and anything else that extends the width of your grill.

  4. Make note of the general shape of your grill.  Different covers will have diagrams of different shapes, so when shopping you will pick the one that most closely resembles your grill.  If it will help you, take a sketch of your grill for reference when shopping.

It is better to overestimate the size of your grill than to underestimate – too little room and your cover will not fit, but a loose cover will still do its job of protecting your grill.  A grill cover is a small price to pay to keep your grill protected from the elements and looking new.
