How to Spot Fake Designer Wallets

Everyone wants a good deal on an expensive designer item such as a wallet. The best place to purchase one of these items is a high-end department store. A wallet that has a price well below market value may be counterfeit.

  • Look for designer wallets at a department store that carries brand name items. Avoid street vendors and secondhand shops. These places are most likely to sell counterfeit wallets by claiming they are made by the original designer.

  • Ask the salesperson about identifying marks. Some designer wallets have serial numbers or other marks identifying them, especially if they are limited editions.

  • Check the labels for missing or incorrect information about the designer. Some fake wallets may have a designer name that is misspelt.

  • Inspect the construction of the wallet inside and out. The material in a designer wallet will usually be genuine leather. It should be thick and evenly trimmed with straight stitching. The presence of glue anywhere on the wallet suggests a knock-off. Designer wallets rely exclusively on stitching to hold the wallet together. They are typically stitched by hand instead of by machines.

  • Inspect the logo on the wallet. Fake wallets may use logos that are the wrong size or otherwise appear slightly different from the real logo.

  • Take a picture of the wallet inside and out. You can show the pictures to someone who is an expert on designer wallets. This person may be able to identify a fake wallet just from the picture.
