How to Stain Decks and Patios

Applying a wood stain to your deck or patio creates a more finished look, and protects it from the weather.  If no color change is desired, you can simply apply a weather protectant instead of applying stain.  Either way, a stain or topcoat should be applied in order to prolong the life of your deck or patio, and to keep it looking its best.

Most stain projects can be completed in a day.  Make sure you check the weather before getting started, you will want to allow ample dry time.

  1. Select the type of stain desired.  A clear sealant will allow the natural wood grain to show though.  Colored stains are best applied when they can coordinate with the rest of the home’s décor.

  2. Ensure that the deck has been power washed.  Allow the deck to dry, and then ensure that the surface is well sanded.  Completing these step will remove stains, old paint or stain, and also help bring out the wood grain.  A clean surface will also help ensure that the wood accepts the stain evenly.  Once sanding is complete, sweep the deck to remove any further debris or dirt.

  3. Begin at one end of the deck.  Take the configuration of your deck into account as you go.  You don’t want to paint yourself into a corner.  Paint handrails and pickets all around the perimeter of the deck using a paintbrush.  Ensue that you brush with the grain.

  4. Begin painting the floor of the deck.  Use either a roller or brush.  Work your way to a door connected to the house, or down stairs leading to the yard.

  5. Allow the deck about twenty four hours to dry before walking on the surface.
