How to Start Plant Nurseries From Scratch
With prices steadily rising, more people are looking for flower and vegetable plants. You can make this need into a lucrative business by starting a plant nursery in your own backyard from scratch. It is inexpensive and can be easy to do.
- Choose your location. A flat area that receives a lot of sun will be best. Mark off your location using a spray marking paint.
- Decide what type of foundation you will be using under your greenhouse. Some people choose to use the ground while others choose to lay a concrete foundation. Some of the greenhouse kits come with flooring. If you choose to sit your greenhouse on the ground, cover the area with some type of weed block.
- Purchase your greenhouse or build your own. There are many different types of greenhouses on the market. Decide what type would suit you best. This will depend on if you are looking to erect a permanent structure or one that you will more or change year after year.
- Research and find a supplier for your nursery supplies. Some people choose to start their plants from seed and this is the cheapest way to do it. Other plants are very slow growers and to have them available for the season you may want to invest in small plants.
- Start your plants to grow in enough time that you will have a supply of what people want when it comes into season. This means that some of your spring plants should be growing shortly after Christmas. People are more attracted to flower plants that are already in bloom. Check your chosen varieties to see what the germination period is. Make sure that you have a wide variety to appeal to a wider audience.
