How to Start Surf Fishing With Your Family

Surf fishing is an activity in which you fish from the edge of the beach. You do not need a boat or any special equipment to surf fish and the activity can be enjoyed by the entire family. Be sure to bring a beach chair so you can sit at the edge of the waves while you enjoy your day on the beach.

  • Know the requirements. Some states may require you to get a fishing license before you surf fish. These should not cost too much and are usually available at the local bait and tackle shops. Some beaches may not allow fishing while others may restrict fishing to certain hours. Do your research before you go to make sure you are following all rules for the beach you have chosen for your surf fishing.

  • Keep away from swimmers. You may have to walk quite a ways to find a fishing spot that is not full of swimmers or sun bathers. It can be dangerous to throw a hook in the water around swimmers. Have your family help you carry your supplies to your chosen fishing spot.

  • Buy the proper bait. Surf fishing does not require any special fishing poles, but it does require the proper bait. Ask at the local bait and tackle shop what bait would be best for the area you are planning on fishing. The people at the shop should know which bait is getting fish in what location.

  • Bring plenty of sunscreen. Surf fishing can be an all-day event. Bring plenty of sunscreen to protect you and your family from the sun.
