How to Start a Beauty School

If you have a passion for every aspect of cosmetology, starting your own beauty school may be something you have always wanted to do. While it will not be the easiest task, you can achieve your dreams of starting an accredited beauty school of your own.

  1. Go to beauty school after you graduate from high school. Become educated and cultured in every aspect of cosmetology. You want your students to respect you love and knowledge of the art.

  2. Create a detailed plan for your school. Decide what types of services you will offer and how much you will charge at your school. Consider details such as your school's mission and culture.

  3. Choose a location for the school that will guarantee easy access to the clientele base you wish to provide for.

  4. Find a property that you can rent out or purchase. If you do not have the money to open up the school, you may be eligible for a small business loan. You can apply for one at sba.gov.

  5. Apply for the proper permits and licenses to run your beauty school. You can find out more information about permit and licensing requirements in your state at sba.gov. Contact the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation for licensing information.

  6. Begin the interior design for your beauty school and each of the classrooms. Your design should reflect the culture you want your school to represent. If your school will focus on new age cosmetology, a modern look would suit your school well.

  7. Purchase the supplies and material you will need to successfully run your beauty school. You can buy most of the products you will need from wholesale distributors.

  8. Hire staff members who are experienced in the field of beauty and know how to teach their craft to others. Be sure to do a background check before hiring any staff members. You want to also be sure that your staff will represent your school in the fashion that you like.

  9. Continue to stay current when it comes to different beauty trends. Trends in beauty change regularly and as an instructor, you should continue completing different classes and courses so that you are up-to-date.
