How to Start a Cake Decorating Class Business
If you have great cake decorating skills and always have people saying how they wish they could make cakes like you do, you might want to start your own cake decorating business by offering classes. This can be a way to make money doing something that you enjoy doing.
- Decide where you would like to have your classes. Do you plan to offer classes out of your home or will you rent a space? You might also be able to offer classes through an already established business, perhaps where they sell cake decorating supplies or craft items.
- Research any licensing requirements and certifications necessary to run your business. If you are having classes in your home, you will need to get in touch with the health department to find out about inspections and to learn about any requirements that you will have to meet.
- Plan your classes so you have an idea about what you want to teach. Decide on how many people you would feel comfortable working with and which techniques you would like to teach. Also, are you planning to have one class, or will you have a beginner class and a more advanced class?
- Figure out the fee you will charge those taking the class. Be sure to take into account the supplies, if you are providing them, and any money you are paying toward rent. You will need to make a profit on top of paying for your expenses.
- Obtain licenses and inspections well in advance of when you plan your first class. This will give you time to fix or install any items you find that you need.
- Advertise to attract students to your classes. You can place ads in your local paper and craigslist. Also, make up fliers to place on bulletin boards in local businesses. If you have a craft shop in the area, see about placing one there.
