How to Start a Computer Services Business

These days, every home and business has a computer. Or two. Or three. Computer service businesses are in high demand. If you are an experienced computer technician and have a bit of business knowledge, you might consider starting your own computer service business.

  1. Develop a business plan. The business plan for your computer service business should include your company's goal and mission statement. You will also need to include an estimate of the business start-up costs, plans to hire employees, a description of the services that you will offer, and a two-year projection of your business costs and estimated income.

  2. Obtain financing. If you are in need of financing in order to cover the start-up costs of your computer service business, you will need to apply for a small business loan. Many banks and financial institutions offer this type of loan to entrepreneurs. Shop around and find the best interest rate possible. Complete the loan application process in a timely manner.

  3. Register your business. You will need to register your computer services business with both the local county clerk and secretary of state. Visit the local city hall to complete the business license application. Be prepared to pay the licensing fee. Contact the secretary of state in order to register the business name. Once your business is registered, visit the IRS website and complete the application to obtain a Federal Tax ID number. This number will be used to identify your business for tax purposes.

  4. Find an ideal location. It is important that your computer services business be run in a location that will provide you with both a store-front to meet with clients, and a repair room that can be used for service, repairs and storage. Contact a commercial real estate agent to assist you in your search.

  5. Purchase all of the supplies that are necessary to run the business. The exact type of supplies that you need will vary based on the services that you are offering. In addition to computer repair and service supplies, be sure to outfit your office with all of the basic office equipment, including computers, printers, fax machines and telephones.

  6. Hire staff. The number of employees that you choose to hire will be based on the variety of services that you offer. You may find that you only hire one or two employees initially. In most cases, you will need to hire additional employees as the business grows and expands. Interview potential candidates and check their background, experience and education to ensure that they are qualified to perform computer service work.

  7. Advertise the business. Run advertisements in local telephone books and newspapers. If your budget allows, you might consider running additional advertisements on local television and radio stations.
