How to Start a Farm Supplies Store
The farm supply store is not just a place to buy farm supplies. It is also a place for like-minded individuals to gather and compare notes about crops, animals and country life. There is a family atmosphere that makes most everyone comfortable. The sense of family is so strong that many farm supply stores have a cat or two, and pets are always welcome.
- Get licensing. The government requires employers and businesses to have a tax ID number. Depending what state you are in, a tax ID number will also be required in the form of a state sales tax licence.
- Connect with vendors. While you are waiting for your paperwork to be filed attend trade shows and connect with vendors. Most have applications available and are more likely to approve you for distributions if they meet you in person.
- Find a location. If you don't already have a location, find one. Buying or leasing can take weeks to close.
- Write a business plan. It is better to have your thoughts down on paper. A busines plan helps get ideas nailed down and hashes out any inconsistancies. Having a business plan is also required if you plan on gettting financing.
- Plan layout. Fencing and stock tanks take up a lot of room. Do you want to keep them outside in a fenced in yard, or will you have enough indoor warehouse space? You also need to think about customer flow and space aisles accordingly. Keep in mind seasonal changes. Having a seasonal section provides room for snowblowers and woodstoves in the winter, while leaving room for chicks, rabbits and greenhouses in the spring and summer.
