How to Start a Party Store Business
A party store provides decorations, supplies, and cards for all those special events such as birthdays, weddings, and graduations. A party store business requires knowledge of the party industry and planning. As with any business, there are steps to follow to get the business open and off the ground.
- Create a business plan. Use the business plan to decide how the store will operate. The business plan has to include the amount of supplies needed, financial numbers and salaries for your employees. You will use the business plan as a tool when applying for financing to open and fund your new party store.
- Visit other party stores. Get advice from other store owners about running a party store. Look around the store to get an idea of type of supplies you will need for certain events. Get an idea of the latest trends and styles in party decorations.
- Find a location for your business. Look for a high traffic area but stay within your budget. Avoid areas close to your competition and areas that cannot be seen from the street.
- Decide what kind of supplies your party store will carry. Decide the events you will cater to or offer supplies for all occasions. Start contacting wholesalers for the supplies you will need. Set up buyer accounts with the wholesaler. Be sure you compare prices. One wholesaler may not charge as much for certain items. Order the items that will fit comfortably in your store. Remember do not go over budget.
- Advertise your party store. List your business in the phone book and online. Create a website that people can go to and browse and shop at. Offer grand opening sales online. For local customers, place an ad in the local newspaper.
