How to Start a Skate Park in Your Town

A skate park can be an excellent way to provide people in your area with a safe outdoor activity that promotes self-esteem and friendship. Unfortunately, many towns across the US are lacking in good skate parks. Starting a skate park can be an uphill battle, but once it's accomplished, it's a good thing for the entire community.

  • Figure out how you plan to fund the park. With many cities across the United States in economic decline, asking for public funding may be out of reach. Turn to private investors. Ask local companies if they would be willing to sponsor a skate park. Ask for donations from the public and start a campaign to raise money for the skate park.

  • Propose a location. Many skate parks are located inside already existing city parks. Find a large location that would be suitable for a skate park and then begin to inquire about how you could acquire the land for a skate park.

  • Ask for celebrity help. Many professional skateboarders head charities that help build skate parks in towns that do not having the funding to tackle such a project themselves. Look into charity organizations that may contribute or bring attention to your cause.

  • Start a public campaign. The public will want to know why they should bother donating to a skate park. Start a campaign highlighting the positive aspects of building a skate park. Make sure to address any negative aspects as well (noise control, supervision, etc.) so that the public feels satisfied in the project.

  • Get the media involved. Let local newspaper and television stations know that you are trying to build a skate park in your town. Inform them of your efforts and ask if they'd be willing to run a blurb to help you get the word out to the public.
