How to Start an Electric Mower

Electric mowers are convenient because they do not use gasoline. They are plugged into a power outlet and can be operated just like a regular mower. When the attached electric cord is not long enough, it can be plugged into an extension cord to allow the mower to reach the entire lawn.

  1. Determine whether you will need an extension cord or whether the attached electric cord will be long enough to get the job done. If using an extension cord, make sure it is the outdoor type. Extension cords are available in most hardware stores.

  2. Plug the electric cord into the extension cord, and plug the extension cord into the power outlet. Straighten out both cords so they are lying flat on the ground. Remove any tangles or knots.

  3. Pull the power cord through the switch housing tightly to remove any slack. If the mower is equipped with a strain relief tab, wrap the excess cord around it in a loop. Leave the loop loose because you will be removing the cord as you move further from the electric outlet.

  4. Locate the power switch. It should be located near the strain relief tab and inside the switch housing. Pull the lever back to you to start the electric mower. Keep the lever pulled back to keep the mower running. When you are finished, push the lever forward to turn off the mower.

  5. Always be aware of where the electric cord is as you are mowing. Do not mow over it because that could cause damage to the cord and mower and can shock you. Pick up any slack as you move closer to the power outlet.
