How to Stay Scent Free While Hunting
One of the most important factors to consider when hunting is your ability to stay scent free. Many animals have the ability to smell a scent at a rate 60 times higher than the human nose. If an animal is able to easily detect your scent, it may run away leaving you with a missed opportunity to hunt the animal.
What You'll Need:
- Fragrance-free detergent
- Fragrance-free deodorant
- Fragrance-free soap
- Odor eliminating spray
Instructions:
- Wash all the clothes to wear on your hunting excursion in a fragrance-free detergent. Hang them on a clothes line to dry instead of using a dryer. Pack them in a bag because you cannot put them on until you arrive at the location where you plan to hunt.
- Wash your skin thoroughly with a fragrance-free soap. Your shampoo should also be fragrance-free. Don't put any creams or lotions on your skin as they often are scented. Don't forget to brush your teeth.
- Wash your rubber hunting boots with warm water and only wear them when you plan to hunt. Avoid wearing them in a gas station or other location with strong odors.
- Try not to eat any spicy foods or other foods with heavy onions or garlic the day prior to your hunting excursion. These types of foods are secreted from your body when you sweat and are detectable to animals.
- Don't smoke while you are wearing your hunting clothes or any time after you have cleaned your body. Smoke is a strong odor that is easily detectable by an animal.
- Massage a pine branch on your clothing while you walk to the area you plan to hunt. Pine branch is a native smell to the outdoors and is a recognized scent by animals.
- Periodically spray odor eliminating spray on your clothing to ensure that you remain scent free.
