How to Train a Hunting Dog

If you are an avid hunter you know how important it is to have a hunting dog you can depend on to help you catch your prey. Many hunters consider their dogs as being their partners. A hunting dog that has been properly trained would be a great asset to any hunter. Some hunters prefer to train their dogs when they are puppies.

How to Train a Hunting Dog

  1. Start training the dog when it is young, preferable between seven to ten weeks old.

  2. Train the dog to hunt by scent instead of by eyesight. A dog that is well trained will be able to smell his prey from a distance, but may not always be able to see it.

  3. Refrain from overfeeding the dog and exercise them during the off-season. The dog must be in good physical condition to perform at its best.

  4. Work with the dog in the type of climate they will be exposed to during hunting season.

  5. Keep the dog well nourished by keeping a fresh supply of water readily available.

  6. Teach the dog the basic obedience commands such as heel, sit, stay and come. Give the dog plenty of praise when he follows the commands.

  7. Teach the dog to show respect to you by using discipline combined with kindness.

  8. Buy an electric collar, which can be purchased at most pet supply stores. When the dog does not follow a command give him a small shock to let him know that his actions are unacceptable.
