How to Vary a Workout Program

How to Stick to a Workout Program

You’ve decided you want to get back into shape, and made the first step by creating a program. Workout plans are great because they provide a clear map of what to do and where you are headed. But when it’s down to the heavy lifting, you’re worried you won’t be able to follow through. There are several approaches that can help you stick to your program.

  • Keep your workout program varied. Introducing new activities prevents boredom and gives you something to look forward to. As your physical fitness level increases, you can also try more demanding activities, such as rock climbing, mountain biking or hang gliding.

  • Integrate activities into your workout program you enjoy doing. If you don’t like to run, don’t schedule yourself for three mile runs four days a week. It can be very difficult to follow through with a plan if you already know you aren’t going to be enjoying yourself. Instead, look for substitutions you do enjoy that can provide the same benefits.

  • Ask a friend, family member or spouse to complete the workout program with you. They can provide you with motivation and support, or you may be able to get them to participate in a little friendly competition to keep you both going strong.

  • Incorporate rewards. It is always nice to get a little positive reinforcement. Treat yourself to a movie or coffee if you feel you have been good.

  • Don’t let one failure stop you. Missing a scheduled workout or having a bad week does not mean you’ve blown it. Get back on track, and just view the mistake as a blip on the radar rather than something that is going to sink you.

  • Set a goal you want to reach. Is it losing a certain amount of weight or completing a marathon? Having an ultimate goal can push you through the hard moments.
