How to Stop Your Dog Chewing Furniture

Chewing on furniture is a common pastime for many dogs. Puppies do it when they are teething because it soothes their gums. Older dogs may do it because of loneliness or boredom. It is important that you catch your dog chewing furniture so that you can discourage the action.

  1. Use a bitter tasting no chewing spray on the areas of the furniture that your dog can sink his teeth into. These formulas are perfectly safe for the dog, and they help to discourage the behavior. Spot test the spray on the furniture before applying if you are worried it could discolor it, but in most cases, it is safe and will not damage your items. Reapply the bitter spray every one to two days to keep the taste strong.

  2. Reprimand your pet when you catch him in the act. Waiting just one minute after the behavior is too late. He is likely to be unable to connect the punishment with the action if you wait too long. A firm "No" should get him to stop what he is doing.

  3. Redirect your dog with chew toys. Praise him as he is chewing on these toys, so he knows that what he is doing is good behavior. Be sure to purchase durable toys, as they can get worn out quickly.

  4. Avoid allowing your dog complete access to your home when you are away or unable to give him attention. This prevents him from chewing when you are not present to tell him "no." A crate or small room, such as a laundry room, is a suitable place for a chewing dog.
