How to Store Cremated Pet Remains
Losing a beloved pet is difficult, and deciding whether to have your animal companion buried or cremated can be a hard decision. Those who choose cremation can select from a number of dignified, beautiful storage options that help honor the pet's memory.
- Select a pet cremation company that offers private cremation services. Some businesses only perform mass cremations, where the ashes of multiple animals are prepared at once.
- Shop for containers. A number of different containers are available for storage services, including porcelain urns, wood boxes and vases with lids. Containers with unusual shapes are optional, and pet owners can even choose containers that are shaped like their pet's breed. Other options include rocks that hold the pets ashes for an outdoor memorial, engraved urns and jewelry with compartments for the ashes.
- Examine the container's lid for security. The container should have a secure lock or latch that will remain closed if an accident or spill occurs.
- Find a place to display the container. Choose a safe location where the remains will not be disturbed. Good choices include a fireplace mantle, shelf or decorative table. Some containers are made for outside use, enabling the remains to be placed in a garden or on top of the pet's final resting place.
- Consider spreading part or all of the remains. Some owners may choose to spread the pet's ashes over a place with fond memories, such as a favorite vacation spot, dog park or walking path.
