How to Store Propane Cylinder Tanks

Propane cylinder tanks hold propane gas which can be extremely dangerous if not handled correctly. Proper storage is the key to safety when storing propane tanks. You need to carefully consider the location as well as other hazards to ensure that the tanks are safe and secure.

  1. Inspect all propane tanks for signs of damage. Never store propane tanks that are damaged in any way as this can be very dangerous.

  2. Contact the company where you receive the propane and ask them how you should dispose of empty or malfunctioning tanks. The propane dealer should be able to provide you with the proper resources for disposing of these tanks safely.

  3. Choose a location to store the propane tanks that is away from any safety hazards. This location needs to be outside in an area that is away from traffic or any heat source because the propane gas inside the tanks is under pressure and highly flammable.

  4. Ensure that the storage container used to store the propane tanks allows the tanks to sit level so that there is no chance of the tanks tipping over during storage.

  5. Use an enclosed storage container that will protect the tanks from water as well as other safety hazards. The storage container should be secure, yet ventilated.

  6. Position each propane tank so that the release valve on the tank is not in jeopardy of being bumped. This is very important as propane gas could accidentally leak from the valve.

  7. Keep the container where propane tanks are stored locked at all times so that accidental injury does not occur.
