How to Store Wrought Iron Furniture
Wrought iron furniture can be a beautiful addition to any patio or outdoor setting. However, when summer passes and inclement weather approaches, it may be necessary to store away your summer furnishings. Because wrought iron furniture is composed of iron, it is necessary that proper storage is executed, as improper storing can damage the furniture through iron oxidation.
- Wash the wrought iron furniture thoroughly with a warm soapy water mixture; dish soap diluted in water works great. Use a sponge or a soft toothbrush to gently scrub away any dirt.
- Rinse off the soapy mixture and dirt with a garden hose.
- Examine the furniture for any rust spots. Because this type of furniture is made out of iron, it is prone to oxidation as the protective finish ages and the furniture is exposed to the elements. Humid, moist climates can cause rust to occur more quickly on furniture.
- Remove any rust spots if found. This can be done by gently scrubbing the spot with fine steel wool and then applying naval jelly. You can let the naval jelly stand on the furniture for up to 15 minutes to more effectively remove the rust.
- Rinse the furniture again with the garden hose, and repeat the naval jelly application process if needed.
- Dry the furniture with a towel and apply a rust-proofing primer to the spots treated with naval jelly.
- Paint the spot with a color that matches the furniture and allow to dry.
- Apply a thin layer of automotive wax with a soft cloth over the surface of the wrought iron furniture. When it is dry, buff it off with another clean cloth.
- Store the furniture inside your garage, or if you cannot move it, use a garden or patio furniture cover to protect it.
