How to Switch Pediatricians

Finding the right pediatrician can be a complicated task. It is important that both the parent and child are comfortable with the pediatrician and trust them. When the pediatrician is not meeting your expectations, it is important to switch to someone who will.

  1. Ask around for recommendations. Talk to your friends, family and coworkers about their pediatrician. Your child's teacher, school nurse or even the mom in line in front of you at the grocery store may have good recommendations.

  2. Call to set up an interview or consultation. The pediatrician should be willing to speak with you before you make a decision about transferring your child's care to their practice.

  3. Get a feel for the office staff and nurses, too. The whole staff plays a big role in the care of your child. Were you treated politely on the phone? Were you put on hold for a long time? Ask how long it usually takes to get an appointment and the procedures for questions after hours. Once you find a pediatrician you are comfortable with, set up an appointment to get your child established.

  4. Ask the practice you are leaving to send all of your child's records to the new office. Do this as soon as possible so the doctor has time to review your child's history prior to the visit. Follow up to make sure the records have arrived.

  5. Trust your instincts. If you or your child do not get a good feeling from the pediatrician, even after your research, feel free to keep looking.
