How to Teach Financial Planning for Teens
It is never too early to start teaching kids about how to handle their money. If you teach your teens now some good financial planning lessons, it will stick with them for the rest of their life. Many people are not good with money, but learning how to handle money at an early age will help teens as they get older.
- Help teens handle the money they earn from a job if they are working. When a teen first starts working and gets that first paycheck, it is very easy for them to just go out and blow it all. They need a firm hand in helping them learn how to save part of everything they make. Make them help you pay for their car insurance or their clothes to give them some responsibility.
- Teach your teen about how taxes work on their paychecks. Go over their check stub with them and explain to them what everything means.
- Help your teen develop a budget that they can live with. Make sure they have money to just play with, but also make sure they set aside money to pay their bills and to save. If they get used to living by a budget now, it will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
- Have your teen set up a savings account to save part of everything that they earn. Make sure that money goes into the savings before they get it in their hands. Getting use to saving money now will help them a lot in the future.
- Teach your kids about credit cards and how problematic they can be. Most teenagers are not mature enough to handle a credit card. Teach them to pay cash for everything instead of getting into credit card debt.
