How to Test Windows & Doors
An important part of fire safety is testing the exits of your home. Exits should be easy to use and should not impede you from getting out of the house as quickly as possible. To test the exits of your home, you will have to make sure that the doors and windows are functioning properly.
Go over a safety plan with everybody that lives in the house. They should know which windows and doors that they should head to in case of an emergency.
Test the windows. Most windows have locks and these locks are usually located on the top of the window. Make sure that these locks are in working order. The locks should lock and unlock without much trouble. Make sure that the window can be easily opened.
Test the doors. Make sure that the lock is functioning properly and the door can be easily opened. Some doors may have more than one lock and each of these locks should be checked out. You will also need to remember if the door opens in or out. Make sure that the door does not have a problem with its hinges that stops it from opening as quickly as it should. If there are any problems with the hinges on the door, then fix this immediately.
Go over the windows and doors again to make sure you are familiar with how all the locks work. This will avoid any confusion if the time comes that the windows and doors need to be used as emergency exits.
