How to Test a Portable Electrical Appliance
If you have small appliances, they should be tested periodically to ensure that they are in good working order. Portable electrical appliances can include a microwave, toaster, or a laptop. You first should give the appliance your own visual test to make sure everything looks okay, and then use a portable appliance tester to test the electrical part of the appliance.
- Look at the power cords on the electrical appliance. Make sure you do not see any fraying in the cord anywhere, and you should not see any loose wires anywhere. Look where the power cords comes out of the appliance and make sure it is completely intact. Look at the other end of the power cord for any signs of wear.
- Plug the portable electrical appliance into a wall outlet and make sure you see no sparks. Make sure it fits into the socket well. If you notice any kind of sparks when you plugged it in, unplug it immediately and do not continue to use this appliance until it is fixed.
- Look on the portable electrical appliance for a CE symbol. If an appliance has this symbol on it, then you know it has gone through many different tests to ensure it is working correctly.
- Plug the portable electrical appliance into the portable appliance tester. Use the tester probe of the appliance tester to touch any part of the portable electrical appliance that is metal. Look at the reading on the portable appliance tester and make sure it reads correctly and at the right levels for the equipment that you are testing.
