Precautions With Electrical Appliances
We use electrical appliances every day without any problems. However, there have been many fires caused by improper use of them. If not used correctly or exposed to water, electrical appliances can cause electrical shock. Using proper electrical safety precautions can help you avoid property damage, personal injuries, and sometimes even death.
- Make sure your hands are dry before you plug-in any electrical appliances.
- Check your electrical appliances and home wiring regularly to make sure you don't have any worn, damaged or old wires. Replace any if necessary.
- Make sure the prongs on the plug are safe and the plastic around it is not cracked.
- Do not run cords under carpets or in places you cannot check regularly.
- Supervise children when they use appliances.
- Cover electrical outlets to keep children from playing with them.
- Follow the manufacturer's safety rules when using an electrical appliance.
- Look for warning signs such as overheating, an unusual smell and short circuits. Turn off and unplug the appliance immediately if you notice any of these warning signs.
- Clean electrical appliances regularly to keep flammable debris or residue from causing fires.
- Do not leave cooking appliances unattended or on when you leave your home.
- Make sure counter tops are dry and there are no items that can expose the cord or appliance to water before you use them.
- Use three-prong plugs only in a three-slot electrical outlet. Do not force three prong plugs to fit into a two-slot electrical outlet or extension cords.
- Do not overload outlets or extension cords.
