How to Thread a Grass Trimmer

In order to keep your grass trimmer performing at its optimal level, you must take the time to thread the line as a part of the maintenance requirements. This type of project can be done on your own time and lasts for a while.

Things You Will Need:

  • Screwdriver

  • Line

  1. Confirm that the power is turned off so that it does not come on when you are in the process of threading. If this is powered via gas, you will need to ensure that the spark plug is taken out. Otherwise, simply unplug the equipment.

  2. Take off the cover of the trimmer so you are able to access the inside of the device. Depending on the model and design of the trimmer you have, you will either need to remove the screws in order to get the cover off, or apply pressure to the sides so that it slides off if there are no screws attached.

  3. Remove the damaged or worn line that you need to replace. In order to do this, simply take the spool out to access it completely.

  4. Measure the line and cut it to fit so that you are able to replace it as needed. Refer to the spool to determine the thickness you need for the replacement line. To stay on the safe side, cut approximately 20 feet of line and adjust the measurements once you compare it to the actual size.

  5. Insert one end into the trimmer and turn the spool so that it catches on. Continue to wind it until most of the line is around the spool, ensuring that you leave a few inches hanging out.

  6. Place the spool back into the trimmer and attach the cover back onto the device.
